Advocates urge more retail rollouts alongside government incentives to improve coverage.

Overview

  • RAC and Zapmap data show supermarkets installed 1,001 chargepoints across 260 sites between January 2024 and June 2025, taking the total to 3,917.
  • Nearly three in five supermarket charging locations now offer rapid or ultra-rapid units, improving options for shorter stops.
  • Only about 5% of the UK’s public chargepoints are at supermarkets, underscoring the need for broader deployment.
  • An estimated 1,876 supermarkets provide EV charging, equivalent to roughly 14% of all stores.
  • RAC’s Simon Williams urged retailers to accelerate installations, Zapmap highlighted commercial benefits for stores, and the Department for Transport said it is working to lower costs and build charging confidence.
