Overview

  • The government’s solar roadmap aims to increase UK capacity to 45–47 GW by 2030 as part of a drive to power the country overwhelmingly with clean electricity.
  • More than 3 GW of “nationally significant” solar projects have been approved since the election, equivalent to powering over 500,000 homes.
  • A safety review has been launched to clear regulations and enable portable plug-in solar panels for flat dwellers and renters.
  • Ministers have opened a call for evidence to explore installing solar canopies over car parks in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
  • The Future Homes Standard will mandate rooftop solar on nearly all new homes from 2027, with the expansion expected to support up to 35,000 jobs while using less than 0.5% of UK land.
