UK Set for Unseasonable 27°C Burst Before Wet, Windy Front

A deep Atlantic low is pulling warm air north before an eastward front brings heavy rain, gusts over 50mph, large coastal waves.

Overview

  • Tuesday will bring notably warm conditions with highs around 25–27°C in parts of England and overnight minima near 19°C in southern and eastern areas, a level forecasters say is unusual for late September.
  • Late Tuesday into Wednesday the same Atlantic low will drive a weather front eastwards that the Met Office warns could produce 20–30mm of rain on western upslopes with isolated totals above 40mm.
  • Gusty winds of more than 50mph are possible, especially on exposed western coasts where very large waves and coastal hazards may cause travel disruption and local flooding.
  • After the wet, windy interlude forecasts point to mixed conditions on Thursday and Friday followed by building high pressure that should deliver drier, more settled weather into the weekend and a warm start to October in parts of East Anglia.
  • Forecasters link the pattern to a deep Atlantic low and a strong southerly airflow, and say a strong El Niño makes a warmer-than-average autumn more likely, so further pockets of unseasonable warmth remain possible into early October.
