UK Releases First Defence Guide for Servicewomen Preparing for Arduous Courses

The manual aims to close a long-standing gender data gap so women can meet existing elite-course standards more safely.

Overview

  • The Ministry of Defence published the guide on Thursday, July 9, 2026, and announced it will be used immediately across the Army, Royal Navy and Royal Air Force.
  • The handbook draws on about a decade of tri-Service research and a pilot programme that tracked trainees and servicewomen through arduous selection and operational roles.
  • Researchers found women make similar relative strength gains to men with structured training but need roughly six months for safe musculoskeletal adaptation, and that averaging six hours of sleep greatly raises illness and injury risk compared with sleeping more than seven hours.
  • The guide gives specific, practical advice on nutrition (including iron, protein and vitamin D targets), sleep, hormone health, recovery and better-fitting kit such as body armour and funded sports bras to reduce injury and extend careers.
  • Defence ministers said standards will not be lowered, allies in NATO and Five Eyes have shown interest in the findings, and officials expect the guidance to widen opportunities for women in commando, airborne and special-forces paths after restrictions were lifted in 2016.
