UK Relaunches Great British Rail Sale With Millions of Discounted Tickets

Ministers present the cuts as part of a wider push to lower travel costs through a regulated fares freeze.

Overview

  • The week-long promotion runs January 6–12 with discounted travel available on selected services between January 13 and March 25, offering savings of around 50% on more than three million tickets.
  • Most train operators are participating nationwide, with Northern advertising fares from £1 on some local routes and LNER releasing one million Advance tickets, including LondonEdinburgh from £27.85.
  • Greater Anglia is selling one-way tickets such as IpswichLondon from £5.50 and NorwichLondon from £6, with all sale tickets limited to specific dates, services and operators on a first-come basis.
  • Many deals require purchase at least seven days in advance, and some operator offers apply to weekday travel only, so passengers are advised to check individual terms before booking.
  • The sale is promoted alongside a freeze on regulated fares for the first time in 30 years, which the government estimates will save passengers about £600 million in 2026/27, including roughly £340 a year for a ReadingLondon season ticket holder.
