UK Reinstates Winter Fuel Payments for Nine Million Pensioners and Benefit Claimants

Letters notifying entitlements will arrive this autumn alongside new claim windows, with expanded income thresholds widening support for lower-income households.

Overview

  • Around nine million pensioners and benefit claimants will receive automatic payments of £100 to £300 in November and December based on age and household circumstances.
  • Eligibility now includes individuals with taxable incomes up to £35,000 and recipients of state pensions or a specific list of benefits such as Universal Credit and Pension Credit.
  • Non-automatic claimants can apply by post from September 15 or by phone from October 13, with the final deadline set for March 31, 2026.
  • HMRC will reclaim over-threshold payments through PAYE or Self Assessment following annual income checks.
  • Those who do not receive notification letters by January 28, 2026, should contact the Winter Fuel Payment Centre on 0800 731 0160.
