UK Reassesses MoD Sites for Asylum Housing as Councils Push Back

Military planners are now embedded in the Home Office to identify temporary options that would let ministers shut asylum hotels.

Overview

  • Defence minister Luke Pollard said all MoD and some non‑military sites are being re‑examined, with planning teams deployed into Border Security Command and the Home Office.
  • Officials have not announced any site decisions, but Pollard did not rule out revisiting RAF Scampton, which Labour dropped last year on value‑for‑money grounds.
  • West Lindsey District Council reiterated that Scampton is wholly unsuitable due to heritage, infrastructure and contamination concerns, and it is pursuing a £300m regeneration plan with Scampton Holdings.
  • Broxtowe Borough Council’s leader vowed to resist any use of Chetwynd Barracks, warning it would jeopardise planned housing and local growth tied to the Toton masterplan.
  • Existing large sites remain in flux, with Wethersfield expanded to more than 1,200 places and Napier Barracks likely to stay open until December, while past schemes drew financial criticism including nearly £50m sunk into Scampton and a £15m purchase of asbestos‑riddled HMP Northeye.
