UK Proposes Licensing Overhaul to Tackle Rogue Cosmetic Procedures

Draft regulations introduce qualification and licensing requirements aimed at protecting patients from rogue practitioners, reducing NHS costs.

Overview

  • High-risk procedures such as liquid Brazilian butt lifts must be performed only by suitably qualified professionals in Care Quality Commission-registered clinics.
  • Lower-risk treatments including Botox and dermal fillers will require new licences issued by local authorities.
  • Patients under 18 will be barred from high-risk cosmetic interventions without approval from a healthcare professional.
  • The Department of Health and Social Care says the reforms will curb unsafe ‘cowboy’ practitioners and ease the financial burden on the NHS of fixing botched procedures.
  • A public consultation early next year will refine the regulations, and bodies such as the Royal College of Surgeons are pressing to limit certain high-risk treatments to board-certified cosmetic surgeons.
