Overview

  • The £1.2bn package comprises a £470m boost for school repairs and £750m for hospitals, mental health units and ambulance sites
  • Funding for 656 schools and sixth forms will cover urgent projects such as roof replacement and asbestos removal
  • More than 400 NHS sites will use their share to fix leaky pipes, improve ventilation and upgrade electrical systems
  • School Standards Minister Catherine McKinnell cautioned that unsafe reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete remains in some buildings and cannot be eliminated overnight
  • Unions warn the allocation addresses only a fraction of the combined £27.6bn maintenance backlog and urge a long-term investment strategy
