UK Overhauls Disability Confident Scheme to Raise Employer Standards

The update follows Sir Charlie Mayfield’s review that judged the programme lacked teeth.

Overview

  • DWP will cut time at entry level from three years to two and end renewals to drive progression through the scheme.
  • A new small-business track, tailored resources and peer-to-peer networks will support SMEs and spread effective practice.
  • Reforms will be tested with employers and employer-led Keep Britain Working Vanguards before decisions on wider rollout.
  • About 19,000 employers currently participate, covering an estimated 11 million paid employees across the UK.
  • Disability groups and business bodies welcomed tougher steps yet cautioned that closing the long-stagnant employment gap will need sustained funding, including the planned £1bn-a-year support and the Connect to Work goal to help 300,000 people, with over 2.8 million signed off long-term sick.
