Overview

  • Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson wrote to vice-chancellors urging practical and proportionate steps and told institutions to use their powers to tackle harassment.
  • The Department for Education will provide around 600 training sessions for university staff, delivered by the Union of Jewish Students, to help identify harassment and support respectful debate.
  • A separate £7 million package will train thousands of teachers to help young people challenge online misinformation linked to hate and division.
  • Universities were told to manage protests so all students can participate in campus life, which could include moving repeated demonstrations that are intrusive or disruptive.
  • The Office for Students warned it is prepared to act if universities fail to protect Jewish students, as new August rules on harassment policies take hold and data from CST and the Home Office show high levels of antisemitic incidents.
