Overview
- Opened on January 15 by Minister Chris McDonald MP at Tyseley Energy Park, the commercial facility is now operational.
- The plant uses Hydrogen Processing of Magnet Scrap to extract magnets from end-of-life products without full dismantling and convert them into reusable powder.
- Current capacity recovers more than 400 kilograms of rare earth alloy per batch and produces about 100 tonnes of sintered magnets per year on a single shift, with potential to exceed 300 tonnes on multiple shifts.
- The University of Birmingham-developed recycling technologies are licensed exclusively to HyProMag, owned by Maginito, a subsidiary of Mkango Resources.
- The £4.5 million project is funded by Innovate UK’s DER-IC program with support from EPSRC, the Advanced Propulsion Centre, the Innovate Climates Programme and EU Horizon, aligning with the UK’s Vision 2035 strategy and expected to support jobs in the West Midlands.
