UK New Year’s Eve Fireworks: 1 a.m. Cut-Off as Police Warn of Tough Penalties

Police warn violators face on-the-spot fines, unlimited penalties or up to six months in jail.

Overview

  • Fireworks may be set off until 1 a.m. on New Year’s, with the usual 11 p.m.–7 a.m. curfew otherwise and exceptions also applying on Diwali and Chinese New Year, while Bonfire Night ends at midnight.
  • The current legal window for buying fireworks and sparklers from non‑licensed retailers runs from December 26 to December 31; outside these dates they must be purchased from licensed sellers.
  • It is illegal to set off or throw fireworks in streets, roads, pavements, parks or other public spaces.
  • Buyers must be 18 or over for consumer fireworks, retailers must not sell F2 or F3 to under‑18s, and Category F4 display fireworks are for professionals only.
  • Police and official guidance highlight enforcement powers that include an unlimited fine, possible six months’ imprisonment and on‑the‑spot £90 penalties, with advice to check local council rules for any extra restrictions.
