UK Mounjaro Orders Frozen Ahead of Price Hike as Korea Confronts Soaring Wegovy Use

Health bodies urge patients to seek supervised prescribing rather than bulk buying or turning to unlicensed sources.

Overview

  • Eli Lilly’s UK distributor Phoenix told pharmacies it would halt new Mounjaro orders from the end of Aug. 27 until Sept. 1 at Lilly’s request to prevent stockpiling before list prices rise by up to 170%.
  • Published price examples show the 15mg and 12.5mg pens increasing from about £122 to £330, with mid‑range doses such as 5mg moving from roughly £92 to £180 from Sept. 1.
  • The National Pharmacy Association warned against bulk buying and unregulated sellers, while Chemist4U and others reported a rise in counterfeit pens and advised patients to consult prescribers instead.
  • Providers report heightened interest in switching to Wegovy; Pharmadoctor advised against issuing several months’ supply at once and outlined the need for clinically supervised switching, while Second Nature said it will freeze September prices for existing Mounjaro patients and offer Wegovy options.
  • In South Korea, Wegovy has been prescribed nearly 395,400 times since its October 2024 launch, regulators reiterated that GLP‑1 obesity drugs must follow approved criteria, and Mounjaro’s entry has led to local stockouts at some clinics and pharmacies.
