UK Motorways Face Day of Disruption as M6 Fatal Crash Confirmed and Thelwall Delays Ease

Police reopened the Carlisle section following a fatal crash, issuing a witness appeal.

Overview

  • Cumbria Police confirmed a man in his 60s died after a tipper truck struck the central reservation on the M6 between J42 and J43 near Carlisle, with an air ambulance attending.
  • The M6 northbound at Carlisle reopened at around 2:45pm after full closures and southbound traffic holds for the helicopter, and officers appealed for witnesses and dashcam footage.
  • A separate evening collision on the M6 Thelwall Viaduct between J20 and J21 led to temporary traffic holds, lane closures and delays of about 60 minutes before all lanes reopened with lingering queues.
  • The A50 near the M1 was closed in both directions after a serious collision involving a pedestrian, with an air ambulance on scene and police conducting an investigation as diversions were put in place.
  • Earlier, flooding shut two lanes on the M5 between J3 and J2 causing roughly 30‑minute delays, and separate M1 crashes near J37–J36 and around J24A/J25 produced long queues and hour‑long delays.
