UK Motorway Disruptions Ease After Day of Crashes and Vehicle Fires

Emergency crews cleared multiple incidents across the network as police reported minor injuries and follow-up enforcement from the M40 crash.

Overview

  • On the M4 near Hungerford, a five-vehicle collision set two cars ablaze at about 7:14am, firefighters extinguished the fires, and two people were handed to ambulance crews.
  • National Highways stopped traffic on the M25 clockwise between J18 and J19 after an overturned vehicle scattered debris; the vehicle was moved to the hard shoulder and the carriageway later reopened after clearance.
  • Warwickshire Police said a four-vehicle crash on the M40 southbound between J13 and J12 led to a female passenger being taken to Warwick Hospital with minor injuries and to the seizure of an unrelated recovery van driven down the hard shoulder without tax.
  • The Severn crossings saw separate disruptions, with an M48 westbound closure for a reported car-and-motorcycle collision in the morning and a later vehicle fire eastbound near M4 J21; traffic was diverted via the Prince of Wales Bridge and later returned to normal.
  • Other incidents included a brief lane closure on the M62 eastbound at J21 and an afternoon two-vehicle collision on the M53 between J2 and J3, with emergency services managing short-term holds and queues.
