UK Military Creates Rapid AI Delivery Task Force to Accelerate Fielding
Task force RAID will speed delivery of AI across intelligence, electronic warfare, planning and drone swarms to prevent strategic lag.
Overview
- Air Chief Marshal Sir Richard Knighton announced the Rapid AI Delivery Task Force, which will report to him and has powers to bypass normal procurement and recruitment to speed deployment of AI capabilities.
- RAID will focus on four priorities: intelligence fusion, electronic warfare, automated military planning, and AI-enabled drone swarms.
- Active service pilots are already showing faster analysis and autonomy, including the Army’s Project Asgard in Estonia, RAF machine‑learning for aircraft maintenance, and Royal Navy trials of autonomous vessels.
- The MoD has used accelerated procurement routes such as the Commercial X awards to give fast contracts to defence tech startups and has signalled a forthcoming investment plan to support the sector.
- Officials stress humans remain accountable for lethal decisions while warning that rapidly evolving AI shortens intelligence cycles from weeks to hours and could reshape how commanders make and act on decisions.
