UK Licence Updates Let Drivers Handle Heavier Zero-Emission Vehicles Starting June 10

Category B drivers will gain new zero-emission vehicle privileges to support the UK’s transition to cleaner road transport.

Overview

  • The new rule takes effect on June 10, 2025, and applies across the UK for all category B licence holders.
  • Drivers with a category B licence will be permitted to operate electric and hydrogen vehicles up to 4,250 kg maximum authorised mass (MAM).
  • Motorists who passed their test before January 1, 1997, will retain entitlement to drive vehicle-and-trailer combinations up to 8,250 kg MAM and to haul minibuses with trailers over 750 kg.
  • Those who passed on or after January 1, 1997, can drive vehicles up to 3,500 kg MAM with up to eight passenger seats and tow trailers up to 3,500 kg MAM.
  • Physically disabled motorists holding provisional category B licences will automatically gain provisional entitlement to ride category A1 and A motor tricycles.
