UK Launches Science Initiative for Climate-Resilient Crops at Global Food Security Summit

The initiative, announced by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, aims to tackle food insecurity through the development of crops resistant to climate change and disease.

  • UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced a new science initiative to develop climate-resilient crops at the Global Food Security Summit in London.
  • The summit was co-hosted by the UK, Somalia, the UAE, the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, with representatives from over 20 countries in attendance.
  • The initiative will create a 'virtual science hub' led by CGIAR, a global research partnership, to link international researchers working on food security.
  • The UK government will also publish a new international development policy document on food insecurity, outlining plans to work in partnership with countries to tackle extreme poverty and climate change.
  • The UK is providing up to £100 million ($125 million) in humanitarian funding to countries worst hit by food insecurity, including Ethiopia, Sudan, South Sudan, Afghanistan, and countries impacted by climate-related events like Malawi.
