UK Introduces Mandatory Electronic Travel Authorization for EU Visitors
Starting April 2, 2025, most EU travelers to the UK will need to obtain the ETA, a digital entry permit, prior to arrival.
- The Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system is now live, requiring applications for travel to the UK beginning April 2, 2025, for most EU citizens and other visa-exempt travelers.
- The ETA serves as a digital security check, screening for criminal records and other risks, and is valid for multiple trips over two years, allowing stays of up to six months per visit.
- Applications can be submitted via a dedicated app or website, with a processing time of up to three days; the current fee is £10 (approximately €12), which may rise to £16 (€19) in the future.
- Exceptions to the ETA requirement include Irish citizens, UK residents with indefinite leave to remain, and transit passengers, though the latter exemption may be temporary.
- The UK government aims to enhance border security and streamline entry processes with the ETA, aligning with similar systems in the US, Canada, and the upcoming EU ETIAS program.
