UK Government to Retake Waspi Compensation Decision After New DWP Evidence Emerges

Ministers told MPs they will reassess the 2024 refusal in light of rediscovered DWP research cited in the forthcoming judicial review.

Overview

  • Work and Pensions Secretary Pat McFadden said previously unseen 2007 evaluation findings on automatic pension forecast letters must be considered.
  • He cautioned that reconsideration does not imply financial redress for 1950s-born women affected by state pension age changes.
  • The government has notified the High Court of its move as Waspi’s two-day judicial review remains listed for 9–10 December.
  • The PHSO earlier found DWP maladministration and recommended payments of £1,000–£2,950 per woman, a package reported to cost £3.5bn–£10.5bn if universal.
  • Campaigners say up to 3.6 million women were affected and have raised more than £250,000 to fund the case, with calls for swift compensation continuing.
