UK Government Invests $273 Million in AI Supercomputer, Isambard-AI, To Be Built by University of Bristol, Set for Summer 2024 Launch

AI Supercomputer Isambard to Leverage Nvidia's Powerful AI Chips, Assist Research in Drug Discovery, Clean Energy, Will Eventually Connect to Cambridge Supercomputer Dawn

  • The UK government will invest $273 million in Isambard-AI, an AI supercomputer being built by the University of Bristol and other partners, including Hewlett Packard Enterprise and with chips provided by Nvidia.
  • The supercomputer is slated for launch in Summer 2024 and will be used for several purposes including drug discovery, climate modeling, and clean energy development. It is set to connect to another supercomputer, Dawn, based in Cambridge.
  • The announcement came during the UK's AI Safety Summit held at Bletchley Park, a historical site known as a center for code-breaking and early computer development during World War II.
  • The Summit brought together world leaders, tech bosses, and AI experts to discuss the future of AI safety and was the brainchild of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak who aims to make the UK a leader in the tech sector.
  • Bletchley Park was home to Alan Turing, a significant figure in the history of AI and computing. Turing predicted machines matching humans in intellectual domains and devised tests which are still applicable in our modern AI landscape.
