UK Faces Two By-Elections Following Scandal and Resignation
Former minister Chris Skidmore and MP Peter Bone trigger by-elections in Kingswood and Wellingborough, marking another test for Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's leadership.
- Two by-elections are set to take place in the UK next month in the constituencies of Kingswood and Wellingborough, following the resignation of former minister Chris Skidmore and the suspension of Peter Bone.
- Chris Skidmore resigned from his Kingswood seat in protest against the government's green policies, particularly the plans to issue new oil and gas licenses.
- Peter Bone was suspended from the parliamentary Conservative Party and subsequently recalled by his constituents after he was found to have committed acts of bullying and sexual misconduct, which he denies.
- The Conservative candidate for the Wellingborough seat is Helen Harrison, who is also a councillor for the area and the girlfriend of Peter Bone. Labour has picked Gen Kitchen, the Lib Dems chose Ana Savage Gunn, and Reform nominated Ben Habib.
- As prime minister, Rishi Sunak has faced a series of by-elections which his party had previously held that they went on to lose, with the only success being a narrow victory in Uxbridge and South Ruislip.
