UK Extends Plug-in Van and Truck Grant to at Least 2027

Ministers say the extension gives fleets cost certainty by pairing discounts with targeted depot charging funds.

Overview

  • The scheme maintains tiered discounts of up to £2,500 for small vans, £5,000 for large vans, £16,000 for small trucks and £25,000 for large trucks, with 2026–27 rates to be set in due course.
  • The move builds on July’s £30 million for more than 3,000 depot chargepoints and sits within a wider package aimed at lowering EV costs for businesses.
  • Officials cite potential fuel savings of more than £2,800 per van each year and focus on decarbonising commercial transport, which produces over a third of UK road CO2.
  • Industry reactions from the SMMT, Checkatrade and Amazon welcomed the decision as a boost for affordability and long-term planning.
  • Consumers do not apply for the grant themselves because manufacturers deduct the discount at purchase, though charging access gaps persist despite more than 83,800 public chargepoints and further installations planned.
