UK expands standard licence to cover heavier zero-emission vehicles from June 10

Overview

  • From June 10, Category B licence holders can drive electric or hydrogen vehicles with a maximum authorised mass of up to 4,250 kg
  • Vehicles fitted with specialist equipment for disabled passengers may weigh up to 5,000 kg under the new allowance
  • Drivers may tow trailers as long as the combined MAM of vehicle and trailer does not exceed 7,000 kg, with individual trailers capped at 3,500 kg
  • Motorists who passed their Category B test before January 1, 1997 retain entitlement for vehicle and trailer combinations up to 8,250 kg MAM
  • No changes to photocard licences are needed to reflect the expanded zero-emission entitlements
