Overview

  • From June 10, category B licence holders can drive electric or hydrogen vehicles with a maximum authorised mass of up to 4,250kg and tow trailers within a combined limit of 7,000kg.
  • New entitlements apply automatically without any physical update to motorists’ photocard licences.
  • The rules cover zero-emission cars, SUVs, vans and small trucks and increase the maximum authorised mass to 5,000kg for vehicles with specialist disabled-access equipment.
  • Drivers are advised to familiarise themselves with the handling, braking and cornering of heavier zero-emission vehicles before setting off.
  • Experts say the change should accelerate uptake of electric and hydrogen vehicles in support of the UK’s net-zero transport strategy.
