UK Energy Regulator Introduces Rules to Expedite Grid Connection
New Ofgem Rules to Clear 'Zombie' Projects from Connection Queue, Speeding Up Green Energy Rollout
- New rules introduced by Britain's energy regulator, Ofgem, will speed up the connection of new power projects to the grid by clearing stalled or unviable 'zombie' projects from the connection queue.
- The current 'first come, first served' process has led to a backlog of projects, some of which have been given connection dates in the 2030s, despite being ready much sooner.
- Under the new rules, projects that fail to meet production targets will be removed from the waitlist, freeing up space for ready-to-go projects.
- An estimated 400 gigawatts' worth of power schemes are currently waiting in the queue, but up to 70% of them are potentially unviable.
- The new queue management system will be operated by the National Grid's Electricity System Operator from November 27.
