  • Chancellor Rachel Reeves confirmed a £2.4bn transport package for the West Midlands with £300m–£400m earmarked for a tram extension to Birmingham City’s proposed Sports Quarter.
  • The tram will link Birmingham city centre with the new 62,000-seat stadium site in Bordesley Green, later extending to Heartlands Hospital, Birmingham Airport, the NEC and the HS2 Arden Cross interchange.
  • Knighthead Capital and Birmingham City FC envisage a £3bn Sports Quarter encompassing a main stadium, a 15,000–20,000-seat indoor arena, a mini stadium for academy and women’s teams, training facilities and mixed-use spaces.
  • Outline planning applications are slated for January 2026, with architectural designs underway and construction set to begin the day approvals are granted.
  • The project is expected to create around 10,000 jobs during construction, support over 8,000 full-time roles once operational and contribute approximately £450m annually to Birmingham’s economy by 2035.
