UK Deploys HMS Diamond to Gulf Amid Rising Tensions
The move follows recent proxy attacks by Iran-backed groups, aiming to ensure regional security and the safe flow of trade.
- UK Defence Secretary Grant Shapps has ordered the deployment of HMS Diamond, a Type-45 Destroyer, to the Gulf amid growing concerns over Iranian-backed proxy attacks.
- The move is seen as a response to recent incidents, including the hijacking of the MV Galaxy Leader by Yemen-based Houthi rebels, and the shooting down of drones fired towards Israel by the same group.
- HMS Diamond will join HMS Lancaster, a frigate which deployed to the region last year, as well as three mine hunters and a Royal Fleet Auxiliary support ship.
- The warship is equipped with the Sea Viper air-defence system, capable of tracking over 2,000 targets and simultaneously controlling multiple Asper missiles in the air.
- The deployment aims to ensure freedom of navigation in the region, protect against missile and drone threats, and ensure the safe flow of trade.
