Overview

  • Around nine million state pensioners born before September 22, 1959 in England and Wales will receive one-off Winter Fuel Payments of £100 to £300.
  • Payments range from £100 to £300 depending on qualifying week birth dates and household composition, with older or lone recipients eligible for higher awards.
  • The DWP will send letters in October and November detailing individual payment amounts before making automatic bank transfers in November or December.
  • Pensioners with taxable incomes above £35,000 (or £70,000 for joint filers) must repay the full Winter Fuel Payment through HMRC via PAYE or self-assessment.
  • Those who deferred their state pension or returned from abroad need to submit claims, and Scottish pensioners will receive a separate award on November 30 from Social Security Scotland.
