Overview
- Defra set October 2027 for launching the Deposit Return Scheme across England, Scotland and Northern Ireland in the Environmental Improvement Plan 2025.
- Eligible items include single-use PET plastic, steel and aluminium drink containers from 150ml to 3 litres, with HDPE milk bottles, liquid medicine containers and flavouring syrups excluded.
- Returns can be made at major supermarkets, convenience stores and newsagents, with deposits refunded by cash, card or voucher at the point of return.
- Consumers do not need a receipt or proof of purchase, allowing people to return their own containers or ones they have collected if they are in good condition.
- Urban retailers under 100m2 are exempt from hosting return points but may volunteer, other venues can also apply to host, and Wales is developing a complementary scheme.
