UK Brothers Sentenced in Switzerland for £3m Ming Dynasty Heist

Stewart and Louis Ahearne face jail time after meticulously planned burglary; one artefact still missing.

  • Two British brothers, Louis and Stewart Ahearne, have been sentenced to three-and-a-half years in prison each for stealing Ming Dynasty artefacts worth around £3 million from the Baur Foundation, Museum of Far Eastern Arts in Geneva.
  • The stolen items, two vases and a cup from the 15th century, were meticulously planned and stolen in a burglary on June 1, 2019.
  • Stewart Ahearne was linked to the crime through DNA found at the scene and a car hired in his name was used to transport the stolen goods back to the UK.
  • The brothers were arrested in a sting operation by the Metropolitan Police, who posed as art buyers and arranged to meet the thieves at a central London hotel.
  • One of the stolen artefacts, a Ming Dynasty wine cup, remains missing and a reward of up to £10,000 is on offer for information leading to its recovery.
