Overview

  • The Metropolitan Police and Crown Prosecution Service have charged at least 60 people under Section 13 of the Terrorism Act for showing support for Palestine Action, on top of three earlier prosecutions.
  • More than 700 individuals have been arrested since the group was banned on July 7, including 522 detained at a single Parliament Square demonstration and 13 at a Norwich protest over the weekend.
  • Those charged face up to six months in prison and will have a Disclosure and Barring Service record that may restrict employment, professional accreditation, and international travel.
  • Greenpeace, Human Rights Watch, Friends of the Earth and the Quakers have asked Attorney General Richard Hermer KC to suspend further court action until Mr Justice Chamberlain’s judicial review in November.
  • Home Secretary Yvette Cooper has defended the proscription, citing counterterrorism intelligence that links Palestine Action to violent direct actions beyond peaceful protest.
