UK Banks to Shut 138 Branches This Summer as Santander Accelerates Closures

Santander is replacing teller counters with Work Cafés using roaming Community Bankers to meet rising digital demand

  • Santander is responsible for 95 of this summer’s 138 branch closures as digital banking usage surges
  • Seven Santander branches in Brixton, Formby, Sidcup, Edgware Road, Willerby, Holywell and Plympton will close between August 11 and 14
  • From August 11 Santander will remove teller counters at its Camberley, Orpington and Rotherham branches in a shift to smaller formats
  • The bank has cut 2,000 jobs this year and CEO Mike Regnier has indicated that further reductions may follow by year-end
  • Lenders are rolling out Community Bankers, shared banking hubs, Post Office partnerships and Work Cafés to maintain service for remote and vulnerable customers
