Overview

  • Santander will shutter 38 branches next month under its plan to close 95 locations this year, accompanied by two Lloyds and one Halifax site to reach 41 closures.
  • The bank is reducing opening hours at 36 branches from the end of June while maintaining 349 full-service outlets and Work Cafés nationwide.
  • Under the FCA-backed LINK agreement, major banks have closed or announced 1,879 branch cuts since February 2022, averaging about 50 closures per month.
  • July’s closures contribute to a projected total of 399 UK bank branches lost by year-end if scheduled cuts proceed.
  • To offset reduced high-street access, lenders are deploying Community Bankers, shared banking hubs and rolling out digital app enhancements for the 3.3 million customers without online banking.
