Overview
- On July 23, UK Defence Secretary John Healey and Turkish Defence Minister Yaşar Güler signed a memorandum of understanding in Istanbul that formalizes the path to sell up to 40 Eurofighter Typhoon jets.
- In mid-July Germany’s Federal Security Council approved the export of 40 Typhoon aircraft to Turkey, reversing its earlier veto within the four-nation consortium.
- More than a third of each Typhoon will be manufactured in the UK with final assembly at BAE Systems’ Lancashire facilities, supporting roughly 20,000 skilled aerospace jobs.
- Negotiations over pricing and technical specifications have begun as both governments aim to finalize a full sales contract in the coming weeks.
- The jet deal is a key element of Turkey’s wider air-force modernization plan, which also includes potential F-16 purchases, an F-35 programme re-entry and the 2028 KAAN fighter project.
