UK and India Conclude 17th Foreign Office Consultations with Trade Deal and First Tech Dialogue

Overview

  • The 17th India-UK Foreign Office Consultations in New Delhi were co-chaired by Sir Oliver Robbins and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri to review progress across trade, defence, security and technology.
  • The free trade agreement signed on May 6 aims to add £25.5 billion to existing bilateral trade and eliminate tariffs on 99 percent of Indian exports, easing market access for British goods like whisky and cars.
  • Delegates held the inaugural Strategic Exports and Technology Cooperation Dialogue to align export controls and foster collaboration in strategic sectors including defence and innovation.
  • India formally thanked the UK for its solidarity in counter-terrorism and both sides exchanged perspectives on developments in Russia-Ukraine, the Indo-Pacific and West Asia.
  • Both governments committed to implementing their leaders’ decade-long vision for an ambitious partnership and agreed to hold the next consultations in London in 2026.
