Overview
- The deal was struck in Brussels by EU Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič, British Foreign Minister David Lammy, Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares and Gibraltar’s Chief Minister Fabian Picardo
- Under the agreement all physical barriers and spot checks for both passengers and cargo will be removed at the land crossing between Gibraltar and Spain
- The accord preserves Gibraltar’s position outside the EU while aligning it with the Schengen Area, EU single market and customs union to sustain economic links
- More than 15,000 daily commuters and countless tourists will benefit from unrestricted cross-border movement once the pact is implemented
- Formal finalization, signing and ratification by all parties remain necessary steps before the pact can take effect
