UK Airports Split Over Hand‑Luggage Liquid Rules

The mismatch between new CT scanners and unchanged national guidance means travellers must check each airport’s rules to avoid having items seized.

Overview

  • Manchester Airport will keep the 100ml limit for liquids in hand luggage for summer 2026, even though CT scanners are in use there.
  • A group of major airports including Heathrow, Gatwick, Edinburgh, Birmingham, Bristol and both Belfast airports now allow up to two litres in a single sealed bag.
  • Many other UK airports still enforce the 100ml container cap, with Scottish airports such as Aberdeen, Inverness, Glasgow International and Glasgow Prestwick among those listed.
  • CT scanners let passengers leave small liquids and electronics inside cabin bags for screening, but container-size limits remain in force and some airports require metal or insulated bottles to be emptied.
  • Passengers should check their departure and return airports’ official web pages before travel because rules vary and differences can lead to confiscation or the need to move items into hold luggage.
