UK Advisers Urge Electricity Price Cut to Speed Clean Tech Rollout

Persistently high electricity prices are blocking widespread clean technology adoption, jeopardizing the UK’s 68% emissions reduction target by 2030.

Overview

  • Electricity costs run nearly four times higher than gas, making heat pumps financially unattractive until power falls to no more than three times the price of gas.
  • Ofgem’s 7% cut in the domestic price cap from July still leaves household bills about 50% above summer 2021 levels.
  • Aviation now emits more carbon than UK electricity generation, prompting suggestions such as flight cost increases, frequent-flyer levies and caps on airport expansion.
  • Greenhouse gases have fallen over 50% since 1990 with a further 2.5% decline in 2024, yet heat pump and electric vehicle deployments remain below the pace needed for 2030 targets.
  • Advisers praised post-election moves to remove renewables planning barriers and reinstate the 2030 petrol and diesel car phase-out but warned that clear heat pump deployment plans are still missing.
