Uilm Alleges Assault as Genoa Steel Dispute Escalates Ahead of Rome Talks

Local leaders head to Rome to press Minister Urso for firm production guarantees following clashes in Genoa.

Overview

  • Thousands of metalworkers marched from Cornigliano, used factory vehicles to tear down police barriers at the Prefecture, faced tear gas, and later briefly occupied Genoa Brignole station, with one worker reported hurt.
  • Uilm says several of its leaders were surrounded, punched and chased outside the Cornigliano gates on Dec. 5 by people wearing Fiom gear, and some sought hospital treatment.
  • Uilm leaders condemned the episode as “terroristic acts” and demanded Fiom and institutions denounce the violence, while Fiom had not commented in reports by late morning.
  • Unions press the government to scrap the “short cycle” plan and secure continuity of work, including roughly 45,000 tonnes of steel to galvanize in Genoa through February and a state role if the private tender fails.
  • Minister Adolfo Urso denies any plan to close Cornigliano, cites extraordinary maintenance to hand safe, functioning plants to a buyer by March, and will meet Silvia Salis and Marco Bucci in Rome to seek concrete guarantees.
