Aadhaar is a 12-digit identification number issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India

Overview

  • Revised document list categorises acceptable proof into PoI, PoA, PoR and DoB for Indian residents, NRIs, OCIs, foreign nationals and children, effective July 2, 2025.
  • UIDAI’s one-person-one-Aadhaar policy now invalidates any additional Aadhaar numbers beyond the first issued with biometric data.
  • Children born on or after October 1, 2023, must present a birth certificate for Aadhaar enrolment under the mandatory date-of-birth rule.
  • Current self-service portal allows minor name corrections, address updates, gender changes and date-of-birth edits without visiting service centres.
  • UIDAI will enable fully online processing of most demographic updates from November 2025, removing the need for in-person service-centre visits.
