UIDAI Waives Child Aadhaar Biometric Update Fees for One Year

The decision makes mandatory updates effectively free for ages 5–17 during the waiver period.

Overview

  • The waiver for children aged 7–15 took effect on October 1, 2025, and will run for one year, with officials estimating about six crore beneficiaries.
  • Under existing rules, biometrics must be updated once after age five and again around age 15, formerly free only within the 5–7 and 15–17 windows, with Rs 125 charged outside those windows.
  • With the new policy, the mandatory biometric updates now cost nothing for all children aged 5–17 during the waiver period.
  • UIDAI and the IT Ministry urged parents to complete updates promptly, noting reports that Aadhaar numbers may be deactivated if the first update is not done after age seven.
  • A broader Aadhaar fee revision also began on October 1, setting Rs 75 for demographic and document updates, Rs 125 for most adult biometric updates, Rs 40 for reprints, and Rs 700 for home enrolment for the first resident, with document updates on the myAadhaar portal free until June 14, 2026.
