UIDAI Tightens Aadhaar Name-Change Rules

The new SOP centralises verification by assigning annexure affidavits, Gazette notices, biometric checks, URN tracking to different classes of correction.

Overview

  • UIDAI issued a revised Standard Operating Procedure that took effect on September 18, 2026 and replaces the 2021 rules for updating names on Aadhaar.
  • The SOP groups requests into categories—minor corrections, marriage or divorce changes, data-entry errors, and major identity-altering changes—and sets different documentary paths for each.
  • Routine fixes such as spelling tweaks, expanding initials or reordering names are treated as minor while complete name changes that alter identity require a Gazette notification and stronger proof.
  • Applicants must visit an Aadhaar Seva Kendra or enrolment/update centre for biometric authentication, submit the prescribed annexure affidavits and identity documents, pay the listed demographic update fee of ₹75, and use the URN to track the request.
  • UIDAI now has explicit authority to verify the authenticity of submitted affidavits, documents and Gazette notices, a change that will raise scrutiny at centres and means applicants should bring exact, authorised paperwork to avoid delays.
