UIDAI Tightens Aadhaar Name and DoB Update Rules

The tighter paperwork and stronger verification aim to curb misuse of demographic edits.

Overview

  • UIDAI published a revised name‑update Standard Operating Procedure digitally signed on September 18, 2026, and uploaded a corrigendum to its Date‑of‑Birth SOP on September 28, 2026, while the original DoB SOP dates to December 24, 2025.
  • The new name SOP sorts requests into clear categories such as minor edits, data‑entry errors, regional‑language mistakes, marriage or divorce changes, gender‑related edits, child cases, and major name changes, and links each category to a specific affidavit or document.
  • Minor corrections like expanding initials or fixing phonetic spellings require standard proof of identity while any change that amounts to a new identity is treated as a major change and requires a Gazette Notification.
  • Ordinary update limits remain in force: an individual can generally change name twice, gender once, and date of birth once, with any further changes subject to a stricter exception process and higher scrutiny.
  • The rules raise practical barriers for applicants because UIDAI will verify affidavits, PoI/PoR and Gazette notices at enrolment or update centres, which may increase documentation needs, processing time, and reliance on in‑person centre checks and the Update Request Number for tracking.
