UIDAI Opens Face Authentication SDK and Aadhaar Sandbox to Embed Biometric Login in Apps

Embedding face authentication inside apps reduces user friction, accelerating wider uptake and operational change for Aadhaar

Overview

  • UIDAI has released a Face Authentication SDK and a developer sandbox so organisations can embed Aadhaar face login with AI-driven liveness checks directly into their apps without a separate APK.
  • The SDK performs on-device liveness detection and instant mobile authentication to stop users having to switch apps, a change meant to cut drop-offs from the earlier APK-based flow introduced in 2021.
  • UIDAI says Aadhaar authentications have climbed to about 10 crore per day and that it is preparing systems to handle 25–30 crore daily authentications as demand grows.
  • As part of a 10-year technology roadmap, UIDAI plans post-quantum cryptography, tokenisation for selective data sharing, and in-house, hyperscaler-like infrastructure with zero-trust design and micro-segmentation to protect sovereignty and resilience.
  • UIDAI is also funding startup research and promoting 'agentic' use cases where narrow-permission AI agents perform verifications or share limited credentials, a shift that could speed fintech onboarding and let users prove attributes like age without revealing full identity.
