UIDAI Makes Aadhaar Biometric Updates Free for Children Aged 7–15 for One Year

The move targets clearing backlogs to protect children’s access to education and welfare services.

Overview

  • The waiver took effect on October 1, 2025 and will remain in force for one year, with officials estimating about six crore beneficiaries.
  • With this step, mandatory biometric updates are effectively free for all children aged 5–17, covering both required update windows.
  • Biometrics are required at around ages five and fifteen because data are not captured below five, and Aadhaar numbers may be deactivated if updates are missed beyond the allowed windows.
  • UIDAI simultaneously revised fees for other services from October 1, 2025 through September 30, 2028: ₹125 for most biometric updates, ₹75 for demographic or document updates, ₹40 for reprints, and ₹700 for doorstep enrolment for the first resident (₹350 for each additional resident).
  • Officials say the fee changes support cost recovery and digital uptake, with document updates on the myAadhaar portal free until June 14, 2026.
