UIDAI Launches Schools-Led Drive to Clear Children's Aadhaar Biometric Backlog

The push relies on UDISE+ visibility with school camps to expedite pending updates before a fee increase on September 1.

The biometric update is free between the ages of 5-7 and again between 15-17. (Representational image)

Overview

  • UIDAI issued fresh guidelines as CEO Bhuvnesh Kumar wrote to state and UT chief secretaries requesting targeted Mandatory Biometric Update camps in schools.
  • Schools now see each student’s MBU status in the UDISE+ platform, enabling them to identify and prioritise those needing biometric capture.
  • UIDAI estimates about 17 crore Aadhaar numbers still require mandatory updates tied to the five- and fifteen-year age milestones.
  • Under Aadhaar rules, numbers can be deactivated if biometrics are not updated within two years of turning five or fifteen.
  • Updates are free at ages 5–7 and 15–17, late updates will cost ₹120 from September 1, and delays can hinder authentication for exams and government schemes.
