UIDAI Deactivates Over 2 Crore Aadhaar Numbers of Deceased in Database Cleanup

UIDAI says the purge protects the Aadhaar system by curbing impersonation, benefit misuse, fraud.

Overview

  • The authority matched Aadhaar records with death data from the Registrar General of India, states and Union Territories, the Public Distribution System, and the National Social Assistance Programme before initiating deactivation.
  • Families can report a death on the myAadhaar portal in 25 Civil Registration System–integrated states and UTs by authenticating themselves and submitting the deceased’s Aadhaar and Death Registration Number for verification.
  • Officials reiterated that Aadhaar numbers are never reassigned, and they urged timely reporting after obtaining an official death certificate to keep beneficiary databases accurate.
  • UIDAI plans to expand verified death-data feeds by partnering with banks and other financial institutions, with integration of remaining states and UTs said to be underway.
  • Procedures exist to reactivate numbers wrongly marked as deceased, while experts caution that uneven civil registration data in some states could still lead to erroneous deactivations.
