UGT Extends Ground-Handling Strikes at Spain’s Major Airports Through December

Mediation with SIMA has yet to define minimum service protocols ahead of walkouts triggered by union allegations of widespread labour breaches

Overview

  • Azul Handling baggage crews will strike August 15–17 and then every Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday through at least December 31 with potential extension into January
  • Menzies ground staff at Barcelona-El Prat, Alicante, Palma, Malaga and Tenerife South will walk out on August 16, 17, 23, 24, 30 and 31
  • Union representatives accuse Menzies of repeated salary breaches, mismanagement of schedules and arbitrary holiday impositions and condemn Azul Handling’s workforce pressures
  • FeSMC-UGT has requested SIMA mediation while Spanish law’s mandatory minimum service levels remain undecided
  • Combined action threatens flight delays and cancellations for carriers including Ryanair, Emirates, British Airways, easyJet and Wizz Air during peak holiday travel season
